The Flam

The Flam

A Flam consists of a grace note () which is tied to a principle note (5) . The grace note is played fractionally before the principle note and is lower in volume. Only the principle note has a specific note value.

Listen closely to the recorded flams in bar 2 of this example.

This example contains a syncopated snare drum rhythm.

This example should be played at a fast tempo in order to be stylistically accurate.

A foot closed hi-hat helps to emphasise the backbeat (beats two and four) in this example. It also contains a new ride cymbal variation.
