Some Country songs, especially Country ballads, are often in three four time. Three four time is also known as waltz time. A song in three four time has the ^ time signature at the beginning of the music notation. It indicates there are three beats (three quarter notes) in one bar of ^ time. As there are only three beats to the bar the standard alternating bass is modified to fit into three beats.
A variety of patterns can be constructed using this ^ bass line by incorporating notes from the treble strings. Try creating some patterns of your own based upon the * patterns studied so far in this book. The following example uses ^ fingerpicking patterns.
It is also possible to apply the Country bass line to 2 bars of the same chord in ^ time by using the optional bass note at the beginning of the second bar. This pattern is applied to the following basic chord progression.
