The Keyboard

Looking at a keyboard is a good way to begin learning about music notes. The black keys always appear in groups of two or three. The white keys contain all the natural notes used in music (A B C D E F G).

If you start at the note C and play all the white notes until you reach C again, you get what is called a major scale. This gives the familiar sound Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. The major scale is a basic building block for scales and chords. A scale is a set pattern of notes played one at a time. Most vocal melodies, bass lines and lead solos are derived from scales. A chord is three or more notes played together. In a band, chords are usually played on guitar or keyboard.
