Practice the following right hand exercises slowly and evenly. Only when the patterns are mastered will it be possible for Study in A minor (pg. 166) to flow freely and rhythmically. Ex. A, B and C occur in the first line and Ex. D is used as the last bar of each section. Take special note of the fingering: p i m am- i a m (Ex. D), the gap between m and i being where the F to E snap occurs and that rest strokes (d) are used on m to give an even, strong attack on the beat. Also take note of the shift to second position (3 on D#) where special attention must be paid to the left hand thumb which moves with the first finger.
Another section which should be practiced separately is Ex. E which involves a shift to the fourth position (G#). It is imperative to keep the left hand totally still as the fingers snap off the first string during this passage and use rest stokes as indicated.
