The minor seven flat five chord consists of four notes taken from the major scale of the same letter name. These notes are the first (1), flattened third (b3), flattened fifth (b5) and flattened seventh (b7) of the major scale, so the chord formula for the minor seven flat five chord is:
Notice that the minor seven flat five chord is simply a minor seventh chord with a flattened fifth, e.g., F#m7 F#m7b5. Another way of creating the same chord is to add a minor 7th interval to a diminished triad; sometimes this chord is called half diminished (ø) chord, e.g., F#ø.
