An octave is the range of 8 notes of a major scale. The first note and last note of a major scale always have the same name and are an octave apart. The following example is one octave of the C major scale in the treble and bass staves.
The distance between the starting notes is also an octave. Note too that the finishing C of the bass staff and the starting C of the treble staff are both middle C.
